Royce was born March 6, 1965 to Larry and Faye Alger. Where Royce grew up in a rural eastern Iowa setting, there Royce grew up working on a farm. In high school Royce had the privilege of wrestling for Brad Smith, a former University of Iowa, National Champion, Coach Smith coached Royce to: three state championships, a junior national championship, and a silver finish in the world championship.
Royce was recruited to the University of Iowa where he wrestled for the legendary Dan Gable. He found that in this setting he was able to accomplish many things, including: being a three time All-American, three time Big Ten championships, two time outstanding wrestler in the Big Ten, Two national tittles at 167 and 177, and going undefeated in his final 78 matches. After Royce completed his college wrestling and earned a bachelors degree in exercise science, he was given the chance to coach on the Iowa staff, for three years as a graduate assistant and four years as assistant Coach.
Royce continued to wrestle in international competition where he was: a three time US Open Champion, a World Open Silver Medallist, a two time Pan-American Champion, a Gold Medallist at the 1990 Goodwill Games. Of all his accomplishments Royce is most proud of his sons Eli, who is four years of age, and his son Jesse, who is 18 months old.
